Phenolics
Phenolic laminates are thermoset plastics, meaning that they will not soften appreciably when heat is applied to them. They are made by applying intense heat and pressure to stacked layers of base material (normally cloth, paper, or glass) which have been impregnated with synthetic resins, resulting in the creation of a hybrid material of solid mass. This new material is extremely dense and hard, and must be machined in order to shape. Resins used in the production of phenolic laminates are not limited only to phenolic, but may include melamine, epoxy, silicone, polyester, or vinyl. Common uses for phenolic laminates include switchboards, gaskets, insulating washers, seals, circuit-breaker parts, and any application requiring excellent mechanical strength and resistance to heat.
