Styrene, known more commonly as polystyrene in its solid form, is a synthetic organic polymer that
is inexpensive to manufacture, strong, highly corrosion-resistant, heat-formable, does not absorb
water, and is an excellent electrical insulator. The addition of other materials, notably latex
rubber, makes polystyrene highly impact-resistant as well. Common applications for polystyrene
include electrical appliance housings and insulation, point-of-sale displays, construction, and food packaging.
